Take advantage of the followings tips to ensure that you are prepared for your next career move.

Resume Tips

  • Prioritize your resume. Do not just list experience, duties and accomplishments in chronological order. When applying for a job, present what you have done that is more important and relevant to a potential employer first.
  • Quantify your accomplishments. Intangible accomplishments, no matter how large they seem, are rarely as impressive as actual numbers, facts and figures. Find ways to measure your accomplishments and report those numbers—but do not embellish!
  • Use key industry words. Potential employers are looking for straightforward content that speaks their language. This is one case where jargon can be a good thing, as long as everyone concerned knows its significance.
  • Match yours skills with industry needs. Do not treat your resume like a menu of a la carte options your potential employer may or may not want; sell your skills! Match the things you do well with the current needs of your potential employer or industry.
  • Make it visually simple. You are not creating a colourful piece of art. Keep your headers and titles simple. Potential employers should be able to examine it quickly, noting short bullets that catch their attention.

Interview Tips

  • Relax: Think positive thoughts and visualise yourself in the interview.
  • Be spontaneous: Be yourself; be as honest as you can be and engage in conversation with the interviewer.
  • Set goals for the interview: Make sure the interviewer knows as much as he or she possibly can about your skills, abilities, experience and achievements.
  • Know the question behind the question: Try to identify the type of question being asked and what the interviewer is trying to elicit from the question.
  • Nonverbal clues: Be aware of your body language. Stand tall, have a relaxed smile and maintain good eye contact. Be alert, show interest and enthusiasm and speak with a well-modulated voice.
  • Sell yourself: Do not rely on your application document and resume in selling yourself. Back up your skills with real experiences.
  • Ask questions: By asking the employer questions, you show that you have done your research and that you are interested in the organisation. Never be the first to discuss salary, benefits or overtime.
  • Your appearance: Your appearance is very important and will help form the first impression an interviewer will have of you. Dress appropriately and be well groomed.
  • Check the venue: Be early and prepared. To be safe, do a practice run to determine where the interview will take place and how long it will take to get there.
  • Follow up: After the interview send a thank you letter and request feedback regarding your performance in the interview.
